While the term “work-life balance” is commonly used, the truth is it’s unrealistic – and even unhealthy – for “balance” to be the ultimate goal. Some people need to be available 24/7 as they start a new business. Others are in a season with newborns and toddlers, just trying to get through each busy day. Many are in the “sandwich generation,” caring for both their young children and aging parents. There are countless reasons why families struggle with finding balance in their lives.
That’s why a better mindset is seeking healthy rhythms by intentionally creating space for self-care, regardless of the season you’re in. This includes making space for sabbath rest each week. God values rest and spiritual refreshment so much that it is included in the Ten Commandments – it’s not just a suggestion for us as believers.
God created each of us to find refreshment differently, so it’s important to ask yourself what you find truly restful and invigorating. It may be time in nature, doing creative work, spending time with your favourite people, reading, etc. Discover what nourishes you and prioritize time for that. Also consider which are “numbing” activities (e.g., phone scrolling) compared to truly replenishing activities.
Another important question to ask yourself is:
- What in your life do you need to prune away to make time for these healthy practices?
- What “good” activities might need to be let go of in order to focus on the “best” activities?
- How is God leading you in this area?
Remember Jesus’ model: he did not rush to places of ministry even in the midst of urgent requests, and he regularly took time to be alone and to connect with his Father.
